Lightscape Returns to San Diego Botanic Garden: A Little Holiday Magic in Encinitas

Holiday lights are one thing. Walking through an entire garden transformed into a glowing wonderland? That's a whole different experience.

One of North County's most anticipated holiday events is making its return, and it's bringing plenty of reasons to get into the holiday spirit. From November 20, 2026, through January 3, 2027, Lightscape returns to the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas for its fifth season, transforming the beautiful outdoor gardens into an illuminated nighttime experience filled with color, music, and a little holiday magic.

And this year, even those who have visited before will have something new to discover. With more than 20 new light installations created by artists from around the world, along with a few returning favorites, Lightscape is bringing an entirely refreshed experience to one of North County's favorite holiday destinations.

A Garden Like You've Never Seen Before

If you've visited the San Diego Botanic Garden during the day, you already know what a beautiful place it is. But after dark during Lightscape, the familiar pathways take on a completely different personality.

The mile-long walking trail winds through glowing arches, colorful displays, and larger-than-life illuminated artwork, all set against the Garden's natural landscape. It's the kind of experience that makes you want to slow down, look around, and probably take a few more photos than you originally planned.

One of the most recognizable installations is the Winter Cathedral, a spectacular tunnel of light that has become a favorite part of the Lightscape experience. And while the returning favorites are certainly worth seeing, this year's new installations promise to give visitors plenty of fresh surprises along the way. That's part of what makes Lightscape so enjoyable. You never quite know what you'll find around the next corner.

More Than Just Holiday Lights

There's a reason Lightscape has become a holiday tradition for so many North County families. It's not simply a display you drive past or admire from a distance. You're actually walking through the experience.

The combination of music, illuminated artwork, and the beautiful garden setting makes the entire evening feel like an event rather than just another stop on the holiday calendar. Seasonal food, festive treats, and holiday cocktails are available along the trail, giving visitors an opportunity to grab something to eat or drink while enjoying the atmosphere.

It's a fun outing for families with kids, a holiday date night, or an excuse to gather a few friends and do something a little different. And let's be fair, finding an activity that appeals to kids, teenagers, parents, and grandparents isn't always easy. Lightscape manages to offer a little something for everyone.

Make an Evening Out of It

One of the things I love about holiday events in North County is that you don't have to travel far to find something special. And Lightscape is a perfect example.

Located in Encinitas, just a short trip from Carlsbad, the San Diego Botanic Garden offers a beautiful setting for an evening that feels festive without requiring an entire weekend of planning. My suggestion? Make a night of it. Head to Encinitas a little early for dinner, then make your way to the Garden for your scheduled entry time.

The Lightscape trail takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes to explore, although you can certainly take your time enjoying the displays. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a jacket for the cooler evening temperatures, and make sure your phone is charged. There are plenty of photo opportunities throughout the experience.

And if you've attended Lightscape in previous years, don't assume you've already seen it all. With so many new installations planned for 2026, there's a good reason to return.

A Few Tips Before You Go

Lightscape is one of those holiday experiences that's worth planning ahead for, especially if you're hoping to visit on a popular December weekend. Tickets are sold for specific dates and entry times, and some evenings sell out. Booking early gives you a better selection of dates and helps avoid missing out on the night you have in mind.

It's also worth purchasing parking in advance. Not only is it less expensive, but on-site parking is limited. Keep in mind that this is an outdoor walking experience covering approximately one mile. Some portions of the trail have inclines and uneven surfaces, so comfortable footwear is definitely a good idea.

And while Southern California doesn't exactly deliver a traditional snowy winter, those coastal evenings can get surprisingly chilly once the sun goes down. A warm jacket and a festive drink? Sounds like a pretty good combination.
