Meditation Gardens in Encinitas: A Peaceful Coastal Escape
Hidden along the coast in Encinitas, the Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens offer a beautiful place to slow down, take in the ocean views, and enjoy a quieter side of Southern California.
Some places have a way of reminding you just how beautiful Southern California really is. The Meditation Gardens in Encinitas are one of those places for me. It's somewhere I always love taking friends and family when they're visiting, and somewhere worth returning to when you need a little reminder of what makes living here so special.
Tucked above the Pacific Ocean, just steps from downtown Encinitas, the Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens feel like a world of their own. Winding pathways, lush tropical greenery, peaceful koi ponds, and sweeping ocean views create a setting that's both beautiful and incredibly calming. And while the gardens are a wonderful place to bring out-of-town guests, they're just as special for those of us lucky enough to call North County home.
As you wander through the gardens, you'll discover flowering plants, stone pathways, and secluded benches overlooking the Pacific. Koi swim through tranquil ponds, and the combination of lush greenery and expansive coastal views makes it easy to forget just how close you are to the energy of downtown Encinitas. It's the kind of place where you don't need an itinerary or even much time to feel like you've stepped away from the everyday.
More Than Just a Beautiful View
The gardens are part of the Self-Realization Fellowship, an organization founded in 1920 by Paramahansa Yogananda, who helped introduce the teachings of yoga and meditation to Western audiences. Yogananda established the Encinitas ashram and meditation grounds during his lifetime, creating a spiritual retreat overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The nearby Hermitage, where he lived and worked, remains an important part of the property's history.
While the gardens hold deep spiritual significance, visitors don't need to practice meditation or follow a particular tradition to appreciate them. The grounds are open to anyone seeking a quiet moment, whether that's sitting with the ocean view, wandering the paths, or simply taking a break from a busy day.
Located at 215 W. K Street in Encinitas, the gardens are free to visit and just a short distance from the shops, restaurants, and beaches that make this coastal community so popular. Visitors are encouraged to maintain a peaceful atmosphere and respect those enjoying the grounds in quiet reflection. Hours and closures can vary, so it's worth checking the official Encinitas Temple website before heading over.
One of my favorite things about living in North County San Diego is that places like this are right in our backyard. You can spend the morning exploring a beautiful coastal garden, enjoy lunch in downtown Encinitas, and still have the rest of the afternoon ahead of you.
Whether you're introducing someone to the area or rediscovering it for yourself, the Meditation Gardens are a beautiful reminder of why Southern California is such a special place to call home.
