A Local’s Guide To The State Street Farmers Market
Fresh flavors, local makers, and one of our favorite ways to spend a Wednesday afternoon.
Every Wednesday afternoon, State Street starts to feel a little different. The market sets up, the Village gets busier, and before long you’ll see people walking around with fresh flowers, produce, something to eat—and usually a little more than they planned on buying.
The State Street Farmers Market is one of those Carlsbad traditions that works whether you’re stopping by for groceries or making an afternoon of it. And if you have the time, we definitely recommend making an afternoon of it. There’s more here than fresh produce. It’s a chance to meet local growers, discover small businesses and makers, pick up something for dinner, and slow down for a little while in the middle of Carlsbad Village.
You’ll find everything from locally grown fruits and vegetables to artisan breads, fresh flowers, local honey, specialty foods, handmade goods and seasonal favorites. The mix changes throughout the year, which is part of what makes it fun—you never really know what you’ll come home with.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
The market takes place every Wednesday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on State Street between Grand Avenue and Carlsbad Village Drive. If you want our favorite time to go, aim for around 3:00 to 4:00. You’ll still have a great selection without quite as much of the later-afternoon crowd.
Bring a reusable bag—or two. It’s surprisingly easy to arrive thinking you’re just going to walk around and leave carrying flowers, bread and something you’ve never tried before. Comfortable shoes are a good idea too, because once you’re already in the Village, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll end up wandering beyond the market.
MAKE AN AFTERNOON OF IT
This might actually be our favorite way to do the Farmers Market. Start with a walk down State Street, pick up some flowers, seasonal produce or something you definitely didn’t come for, and then stay in the Village for an early dinner. If the weather is good—which, let’s be honest, it usually is—you can finish with dessert or walk down toward the coast.
Nothing complicated. Just a really good Wednesday afternoon in Carlsbad.
Vendor participation and seasonal offerings can change throughout the year, so it’s always worth checking the official market information before heading over, especially around holidays.
And if you find a vendor we need to know about, send it our way. We’re always adding to our Carlsbad favorites.
