The Foothills: One of Carlsbad’s Best-Kept Neighborhood Secrets
I know a lot of Carlsbad neighborhoods from working in real estate. The Foothills I know because I actually lived there.
My family called this neighborhood home for many years, and when I think about our time there, it’s not the floor plans or HOA amenities that come to mind first. It’s walking to the park, going to the pool, being close to the trails, knowing the neighbors, and all the little routines that become part of living somewhere.
So if you’re looking at The Foothills and wondering what it’s actually like to live there, here’s what I’d tell you.
The Part of The Foothills You Have to Live Here to Know
Some of my favorite memories from The Foothills are the neighborhood things — parades, end-of-school celebrations and the get-togethers that brought everyone outside.
A lot of those traditions came from neighbors simply wanting to bring people together. The HOA now hosts events throughout the year too, so that community piece is still very much part of life in The Foothills.
It’s one of those things you don’t really see when you’re touring a house, but you definitely feel once you live in a neighborhood.
One of the things you notice about The Foothills is that people are out enjoying the neighborhood. Kids are at the parks, neighbors are walking, and the pool and trails actually get used. It gives the neighborhood a really nice sense of life without feeling overly busy.
There’s a heated pool with lap lanes, a children’s pool and spa, pickleball courts, playgrounds, BBQ and gathering areas, trails and open space. There’s even RV and boat storage available to residents, subject to HOA availability and rules.
It’s a lot to have right within the neighborhood, and it makes everyday life here a little easier — and a lot more enjoyable.
Not Every Foothills Home Lives the Same
This is one thing I’d want a buyer to understand before choosing a home here.
Some homes are tucked around shared driveways. Others have more traditional lots and larger outdoor spaces. You’ll find courtyards, different orientations and even certain floor plans with casitas.
So I wouldn’t compare Foothills homes on square footage alone. The street, lot, orientation, outdoor space and where the home sits within the neighborhood can make a surprisingly big difference.
The Location Makes Everyday Life Easy
One of the things I liked about The Foothills was how much was close by. Lake Calavera and miles of trails are right there, everyday errands are easy, and you can be in the Village or at the beach without going far.
And then there’s LEGOLAND. If you have kids, getting annual passes is one of those very Carlsbad things to do — you can pop over for a few hours without making a whole day of it.
It’s the kind of convenience you don’t necessarily think about when you’re looking at a map, but you really appreciate once you live here.

Why I Still Have a Soft Spot for The Foothills
After living here for so many years, I know The Foothills in a way that’s hard to put into a list of features. It’s the way the neighborhood is laid out, the parks and trails, the people, the community, and all the little things that make everyday life here work.
There are a lot of great neighborhoods in Carlsbad, but The Foothills will always stand out to me.
It really is a great place to call home.
