Best Restaurants in Carlsbad Village — According to Someone Who Actually Lives Here

I have a confession: I eat out a lot. My office is in Carlsbad Village, which means I'm surrounded by some of the best food in North County every single day. These are my actual go-to spots — not the ones with the most Yelp reviews, but the ones I keep coming back to because they're just really, really good.

Gregorio's Italian

Heart of the Village · Live Music · Intimate

This one is personal. Gregorio's is literally next door to my office, and I'm not even a little bit mad about it. It's everything a neighborhood Italian restaurant should be — intimate setting, homemade bread, live music, and food that feels like someone's nonna made it. It's been a Carlsbad Village staple for years and it shows. This is the kind of place that doesn't need to try hard because it's just genuinely good.

My favorites: The Gnocchi, the Chicken Soup, and — if you're feeling like you deserve something special — the Cioppino. You deserve it.

Local tip: Call ahead for a reservation, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. This place fills up fast and walk-ins will break your heart on a busy night.

Village Kitchen & Pie Shoppe

Hometown Cooking · Breakfast to Dinner · Hidden Gem

OK, I'll be honest — this is my gatekeeper spot. The one I don't tell everyone about because I like it exactly the way it is. Village Kitchen is hometown cooking done right, from breakfast all the way through dinner. Homemade pies. Homemade soups. Daily. It's the kind of place that reminds you what food used to taste like before everything became a concept.

And here's a pro tip that will make you very popular at the holidays: order your holiday pies here. Thanksgiving, Christmas — they do it all and they do it better than anything you'll find at a grocery store.

Local tip: Order your holiday pies in advance. They sell out. You've been warned.

Nick's on State

Date Night · Upscale · Reservation Recommended

When you want to feel like you're somewhere special without leaving Carlsbad, Nick's is the answer. It has that high-end feel — the kind of place where the food matches the ambiance and both are excellent. Perfect for date night, a celebratory dinner, or honestly just a Tuesday when you feel like treating yourself.

Don't skip the appetizers — the Asparagus Fries are not what you'd expect and they're absolutely worth it. The Spicy Thai Salad is one of those dishes you keep thinking about after. And the Pan Seared Chilean Sea Bass? Just order it. And then stay for dessert — all of them.

Local tip: Make a reservation for lunch or dinner. This one books up — especially on weekends.

La Papagayo

Anytime · Anyone · Live Music · Happy Hour

What is La Papagayo? Good question. It's good! That's the honest answer. Breakfast, lunch, dinner — covered patio seating, TVs at the bar, live music, and an energy that works for basically any occasion and any group. This is my go-to for meeting someone for lunch or catching happy hour after a busy day in the village.

It's the kind of place where you can show up with your colleagues, your out-of-town family, your neighbor, or just yourself — and it's always right. No pretense. Just good food and good vibes in the heart of the village.

Local tip: Great for groups, happy hour, or a casual lunch. No reservation needed for most visits — just show up.

Handel's Homemade Ice Cream

Always Worth It · Classic · Village Staple

Not technically dinner — but absolutely essential. Handel's is homemade ice cream the way it's supposed to be, and it's been a Carlsbad Village staple for good reason. There's almost always a line. It's almost always worth it.

Local tip: Order ahead and pick up. Skip the line — especially on summer weekends when the wait can get long. Worth every minute either way.
