Carlsbad swimmers, the wait is almost over! After a major renovation and expansion, the beloved Monroe Street Pool is officially scheduled to reopen to the public on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 6 a.m.
For generations, Monroe Street Pool has been a favorite gathering place for Carlsbad families, recreational swimmers, and fitness enthusiasts. Now, after more than four decades of serving the community, the facility is ready to welcome swimmers back with exciting upgrades designed to make the experience better than ever.
What's New at Monroe Street Pool?
The newly renovated facility offers more space, modern amenities, and improvements inspired by community feedback.
Here's what swimmers can look forward to:
A bigger pool: The expanded pool features 50% more swimming lanes, creating additional space for lap swimming, lessons, and aquatic activities.
More room to relax: An expanded pool deck includes lockers, outdoor showers, additional shade, and bleacher seating.
Improved parking: A larger parking lot makes visiting the facility more convenient.
Updated changing facilities: Renovated locker rooms and new family restrooms offer added comfort.
Better accessibility: Improved access and upgraded pool equipment enhance the experience for swimmers of all ages.
Energy-efficient upgrades: Solar energy improvements support the city's sustainability efforts.
Neighborhood-friendly design: Fully enclosed frontage along Monroe Street is designed to help reduce noise for nearby residents.
While a few finishing touches may continue in limited areas after reopening, the remaining work is not expected to interfere with public use.
A $21 Million Investment in Carlsbad's Future
The renovation represents a significant investment in one of Carlsbad's longtime community amenities.
In November 2022, Carlsbad voters approved spending up to $24 million to reconstruct and expand Monroe Street Pool. With annual inflation adjustments, the authorized amount could have approached $27 million.
The good news? The project was completed for approximately $21 million, coming in under budget.
Beyond the new amenities, the renovation helps ensure Monroe Street Pool remains a welcoming place for future generations to learn to swim, exercise, and enjoy time together.
One Pool Pass, Two Great Carlsbad Facilities!
Along with the reopening comes another exciting change for local swimmers.
The City of Carlsbad is introducing a combined aquatic membership that provides access to both Monroe Street Pool and Alga Norte Aquatic Center.
Here's what you need to know:
Current Monroe Street Pool passholders: If you previously held a monthly or quarterly pass, you can purchase the new combined membership online beginning November 3 or in person at the facility.
Alga Norte Aquatic Center passholders: If you already have a monthly or quarterly membership, you're all set! Your existing membership will now provide access to both facilities.
Drop-in swimmers: Daily passes will continue to be available for purchase in person.
This new system gives Carlsbad residents more flexibility to enjoy two of the city's aquatic facilities with one membership.
Ready to Dive Back In?
Whether you're an early-morning lap swimmer, a parent introducing your little one to the water, or simply someone who enjoys staying active, the reopening of Monroe Street Pool is something worth celebrating.
It's exciting to see a longtime Carlsbad community favorite receive the improvements it needs to serve residents for decades to come.
Mark your calendar for Tuesday, November 3, at 6 a.m., and get ready to make a splash!
